pain-managementPain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience. Everyone feels pain time to time but it differs from person to person. This unpleasant feeling can change from mild, moderate to severe. There are different types of pain i.e. acute pain, chronic pain, muscle pain, nerve pain, referred pain, phantom pain etc. Nature of sensation can be described as throbbing, pinching, pulsating, pricking, lancinating, stabbing, burning, tearing, constant pain, sharp pain etc. There is another class of pain known as psychological or mental pain. It is caused due to some kind of trauma that affects your mind or psychological status. It is not a physical trauma but an emotional hurt or stress with an extremely aversive feeling. People will have suicidal tendency, anxiety, depression, inferiority complex, self disappointment etc.

Management of pain depends upon the cause, duration, intensity, aggravating and relieving factors of pain. There are a lot of pain management medications are available such as pain killers, non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, steroids etc. But these medications kill our resistance power too. In Ayurveda, a number of pain relieving therapies or treatments available are available. Ayurvedic therapies help to effectively subside pain and tenderness, reduce swelling and stiffness, increase muscle power and tone, and improve mobility and blood circulation of the affected body part. Ayurvedic pain management therapies are effective in both acute and chronic types of pain such as sports injuries, sprain, muscle cramps, spondylosis, sciatica, low back ache, arthralgia, fibromyalgia, arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, paresthesia, muscle stiffness etc.

PATRA POTTALI PINDA SWEDA
This is a type of snigta sveda (unctuous sudation) wherein the fomentation is done by heated bolus bags containing leaves of medicinal plants. Commonly vatahara (pacifies vata dosha) leaves like Castor leaves, Nirgundi leaves, Arka leaves are taken for bolus preparation and vatahara (pacifies vata dosha) oils can be used for the swedana purpose. It is used in the management of sports injuries, arthritis, frozen shoulder, spondylosis etc.

JAMBIRA POTALI SWEDA
It is done by application of heated bolus bags filled with fried Jambira and other drugs like turmeric, Medhika, Satapushpa, Rasna, saindava salt etc. Jambira (lemon) which is the main ingredient of the jambira pinda sweda is heavy, hot in nature and is amla (sour) rasa taste) pradana dravya which is soolahara (pain reliving). JPS is indicated in vata vitiated conditions like osteoarthritis, sciatica, low back ache, myalgia etc.

NADI SWEDA
Nadi swedan is a type of fomentation therapy where steam is induced on specific parts of body with the help of an instrument called nadi swedana yantra. Steam can be passed through a rubber tube connected to the instrument. This is an easiest type of sudation technique for applying heat to a localized part of the body. This procedure should be carried out till the appearance of proper symptoms of sudation.

KATI BASTI
This is a procedure in which oil is retained in the low back region inside dough made up of black gram powder. Specific oil can be use according to the condition of the patient. Uniform temperature should be maintained throughout the procedure. Time and duration of the treatment varies according to the condition of the patient. This is indicated in low back ache, lumbar spondylosis, LVDP, lumbar canal stenosis, sciatica, post traumatic conditions and arthritis.

GRIVA BATI
Retaining oil in the nape of neck is known as Griva basthi. Procedure is same as that of Kati basti. Specific oil that relives pain, stiffness, and strengthens muscles should be taken for the procedure. It is indicated in cervical spondylosis, neck stiffness etc.

JANU BASTI
In this procedure suitable warm medicated oil is retained on the affected knee in a container of black gram dough for certain period of time. This procedure is similar to Kati basti. It is indicated in painful osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis etc.

URO BASTI
The word uro means chest and basti means retaining. So in this procedure warm medicated oil is retained over chest region for a certain period of time. It helps to remove respiratory illness, unresolved anger, sadness etc. It is one of the most effective and powerful treatment in Ayurveda as it nourishes, strengthens and balances functions of your heart and rejuvenates your heart (hridaya) marma.
